Dear guildie,
I just can't manage it anymore. I've spent way too much of my time analyzing Recount during raids and log parses afterward, trying to help you and explain to you how to hunter, and you just. Do. Not. Get. It. There's really no other way for me to put it. I've been willing to accept that maybe you had a bit of a learning curve, and a gear disadvantage relative to me. And really, until about three weeks ago, when you made off like a bandit in LFR and our MSV clear, you did have a gear disadvantage compared to me. But honestly, with how many times I've offered you input on how to improve your hunting skills, it seems like nothing has sunk in. It's a shame really, because you are a likable dude.
Despite your continuing lack of attention to Black Arrow (which you did not use until I told you a while back that, hey, you might wanna use that) and Serpent Sting (including the Elegon kill a few weeks ago where you had no damage done from SS), despite your continuing preference for Arcane Shot over Explosive Shot, last night you managed to astound me yet again.
So we got our first Garalon kill last night (yay) and went off to Wind Lord, he who has over 9000 adds, some of which must be CC'd. It took a few pulls for us to adjust to the non-LFR way of the fight, but we killed him. Then I looked at Recount, and saw the following:
I'm willing to cut you some slack on the bear tank being a bit above you because she was tanking the five live adds. But she shouldn't be THAT far above you. And you were neck in neck with the tank who was on the boss. Now, it's not like you are at a disadvantage here, since the five adds are all nicely grouped up in front of the bear tank. That should scream EXPLOSIVE TRAP and MULTISHOT REGULARLY to any hunter, right? Especially those of us (including you and me both) who roll as Survival, since, ya know, Improved Serpent Sting is candy. But, for whatever reason, you decided that some AoE worked into your rotation while you pew pew down the kill target would not be necessary. For comparison, here's what I did:
I suppose I should give you props for having more ticks from Black Arrow than I did. Well done. But seriously, how on earth did it NOT occur to you to hit that Multishot button? I'm at a loss for words here.
Dear GM,
Like I said, I like the dude well enough. He usually comes along for old school raids and drunk raid lulz, and he's friendly towards people we pug. But notice the warlock, who recently resubbed and whose gear is still half blues. This was not the only fight on which she left him in the dust; she did so on Garalon as well, and throughout MSV last week. When our pally healer actually shows up later this week and we need him for three heal fights, and we have one too many DPS, I get that you're probably gonna take other hunter, since he's been here more consistently, blah blah blah. But when we start progressing into Throne of Thunder and we hit a DPS cockblock fight, and he's doing 15k less than everyone else, what then?
Yes, I am biased in favor of the warlock; she's a friend of mine IRL. But there will come a point where the rest of the DPS won't be able to pick up the slack. And if you think she's not busting her figurative balls to max her numbers and earn back the raid spot she had in Cata before her jobs (yes, she had two for a while) overwhelmed her and forced her to unsub, well...you are not prepared. I've done all I'm willing to do to help our other hunter out. The ball's in your court.
Love,
the hunter (formerly the feral) |

While you're looking to school someone in hunter, I do have a question! What have you found to be your best rotation? I've just started leveling my hunter back up (she's been nothing but a pet collector / battler since Cata-days) and am curious what's worked best for you.
I haven't gotten too far into checking out specs and stuff, because I've been spending my time mostly on my Feral main trying to gear her up.
I primarily keep her in BM because of pets, but, entirely don't mind using an off spec for dungeon / scenario / raid runs!
( and if you don't feel like it, that's okay too, since I get trying to cram info down one person's throat is frustrating enough let alone some random e-stranger!)
>Feral main
That alone gets you a response from a long time feral.
I haven't touched MM in a long while, so I won't be much help there. For survival, I do something like this:
1. Explosive Shot every time it's up. If you get a Lock and Load proc, three straight Explosives.
2. If 3 or more targets, Explosive Trap and Multishot. If single target, Black Arrow and Serpent Sting. Black Arrow on cooldown.
3. I spec for Glaive Toss and Dire Beast, so they're typically next.
4. Cobra Shot if you need focus.
5. Arcane Shot if you need to dump focus.
6. Snake Trap. Because it's Snake Trap.
The trick is making sure that you have enough focus to fire Explosive Shot and Black Arrow as soon as they're up, so you have to plan a GCD or two in advance as you go. When I switched mains early this expansion, I just went and quested and did some dungeons to get the hang of it. Practice makes perfect.
Thank you for taking the time to reply! Right now I find myself trying to juggle and not constantly be out of focus, but this is a great starting point!
you have to plan a GCD or two in advance as you goI find OmniCC is a life saver in this regard. I love it on all my toons, but it is SUCH a help on my hunter, just to be able to gauge remaining cooldown on spells vs. focus levels. Linkage: http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/omni-cc
in general, this is a good starting point: http://www.noxxic.com/wow/pve/hunter/beast-masteryAlso, each spec is pretty much holding its own right now. BM went from the loleasy spec though to having a huge set of micromanagement buttons. It took some getting used to for me. >_<
I appreciate the fact that they're at least somewhat close now though! It was a pain constantly flipping back and forth because of this reason or that!
And thanks for the link :)
Yeah, I was a pretty die-hard BM hunter back in BC days and LK is where I was forced to start spec switching since BM got severely nerfed to the point that I was barely carrying my weight in raids. :( Since I had no interest in either MM or Surv, I switched to any spec for raiding that was the highest ranked and when secondary specs came out, had BM as my secondary spec *always*. Biggest reason I was happy with Pandaria expac is because it made BM completely 100% viable again, and I've not actually changed specs since I started with it.
oh goodness yes, This is what frustrated me so much. It always felt like I was settling on this spec or that just because it worked and I didn't want to be carried through content. I'm glad BM is actually an option again because I love it and have tamed all my long time pet lusts XD
"I suppose I should give you props for having more ticks from Black Arrow than I did. Well done. But seriously, how on earth did it NOT occur to you to hit that Multishot button? I'm at a loss for words here."
Actually, I put this strongly in your court. Of course he had more Black Arrow ticks...because you were using Explosive Trap! So really, the fact that he only had 8 more ticks of BA than you and ET doesn't show up on his top 15 list makes it even worse on him.
I have a pally your hunter could go hang out with. I spent all of cara trying to "fix" him (and as I don't really play a pally, all I could do was look at websites and parrot that to him and give him th websites to look at), and he's still using int gear as ret gear, throwing whatever gems he feels like in slots (we had an incident in end wrath where he had BC dungeon PVP gems in slots)...I just...argh yeah. | |
