Dear DK starter zone,
Oh how I love you so much. I've done you so many times, but I still enjoy you every single visit. People running in fear from my new death knight, having to kill the woman who remembered me, the Lich King whispering sweet nothings in my ear, the way the zone evolves as you move through the storyline. Nothing can match it.
Worgen starter area had a good mood and nice artwork, but it took forever and a day to get through. I disliked it so much that, even though I love worgen, I won't be rolling another.
Goblin starter zone can go die in a fire... which it does!
If I could somehow interact with the outside world and come back home to the DK starter area, I would set my hearth there and never move it. Toss in an AH and portals to the main cities, and I'd (re-)die a happy DK.
It pained me to have to delete one of my alts on WRA, but it was so worth it to make another DK.
Dandelion, the newest and most ill-named DK there ever was
Surely Dandelion would be an ideal name for a Troll feral druid.
He started out life as a worgen druid, but he was on my second account and I doubt I'll ever activate that again, so I asked the GMs to free the name and Dandelion became a belf monk. Deleted him so I could use the 11th slot, but didn't want to lose the name.
The fun part was coming up with an IC reason for a death knight to be named Dandelion, but I finally figured it out -- he's going to be batshit insane. I have Invincible, so he's going to ICly ride that, but it's actually going to be a death charger with leather wings glued on it. He's going to claim to be a healer, the Lich King, and whatever else blows through his mind.
I think that should be fun and amusing!
It would fit a troll druid though, you're right. Unfortunately I really don't like playing trolls. (Those toes, those awful toes.)
Not to mention the way they run. ._. Eesh.
Your new DK sounds amazingly fun, though. xD
Best fucking idea EVER I will be creeping around looking out for you on Wyrmrest Accord probably. Also do you draw because I want art of him with like a harness with wings on it he's putting on his deathcharger, "oh no invincible your wings fell off let me help youuuuu."
This made my day.
I have to admit that the forced starter zones of the worgen, goblins, pandaren, and Death Knights have made me quite weary. Especially worgen and goblins, which is a shame because I love those two races! But I don't want to do their starter zones, ever. I often WILL do them, but it's a huge chore. :P
Kinda like how after a couple of run-throughs of the starter events in Oblivion or Skyrim, I scuttle right off to find a quicker alternate-start mod.
Long starts are just not made for people who make lots of characters.
I don't mind the DK zone because a.) I've probably done it 40 times by now, and b.) you start at level 55. That kind of makes up for having to do a pre-set starting area for me.
Goblins though... Oh man, WORST starter zone. It's long, not interesting to me, and just...actually difficult at times. I'm not a fan of the worgen one either. I want those damn carriages in-game as a three-seater mount or something and I want that architecture. However the zone itself is dark and dreary--I can do without that.
But I think I also hate the pandaren starting zone, too. I'm bitter than when I rolled a panda shaman she ran out of mana after using four lightning bolts. Just so bitter.
It helps that I've done the DK zone so often. I know all the quests, I know where to go for things, and with heirlooms and guild XP, I nearly outlevel the place. (Dandelion exited the zone at level 59.6 last night! A few DMF quests and I hit 60/flying! WOO!)
The only downside to that was that I didn't read one single quest text, and I know there's a lot of goodness in them.

I actually think that the problem with the panda starting zone is that it's tuned for monks (*cough*OP*cough.*) When I ran through it on a baby monk, it was a breeze, but when I did it on a panda shammy, it was downright grueling. They just didn't time the difficulty curve very well for any class but the monks.
Oh! I totally forgot about the panda one. Agreed that they're all just a chore (other than the DK one). I like the goblin one the least, but then I don't like goblins, so that works out.
Long starts are just not made for people who make lots of characters.
Hah! My Nelf DK is a fallen druid, but sadly I've never had the opportunity to RP her.
My Nelf druid? Is named Pie. I got the name released a couple years ago and love it. IC she... really loves to bake. But sadly no RP with her either. Both toons are on SWC and it's deader than Sylvanas. Makes me sad.
My Tauren druid on WRA is named Sunbeam. There's a bread joke in there somewhere. lol
Wow, you have great names! I love noun/RL word names. Some of mine on WRA are Thistle, Clover, Clove, Keen, Reed, Crowfeathers, and Sedgegrass. I stumbled into a plant theme, then couldn't stop. :P
On WRA I have Sunbeam and Dark. Everything else is either color or weather related, like Greymoon or Whitefrost. lol
I don't like playing DK's to max level but I do love playing through their start zone, it's just so much fun!(the uh massacring of innocents shouldn't be as much fun as it is >.>)
And as much as I love worgen I agree about their start zone, I had fun the first time I leveled a toon through but I've lost more love for it every time I've done it. I had to get my bf to make an alt with me just so I could get my baby lock through the start zone because it's such a drag for me now.
I still have a little goblin shammie stuck in the Lost Isle because it's just so damn dull. Incidentally I love the panda start zone even a second time round.
Oh my god, is that Thor in your icon? SO CUTE! :D
And agreed, I'm indifferent about leveling DKs (RPing them is a whole different story), but I love the starter zone so much. You're so right, it shouldn't be as fun massacring innocents as it is!
I've never successfully made it out of the goblin starter zone. Between not liking goblins and not liking the zone... Doomed.
It is indeed a bb Thor.
It's stupidly fun and entertaining. :D
See my problem is that I love goblin ladies, I think they're so cute and adorable. However I have only ever made it out of their starter zone once... :|
Hi, I'm mentally ill, also known as 'crazy'! I'm here to be the friendly deliverer of the message that the reason of 'batshit crazy' is offensive and treats mentally ill people horribly.
Mentally ill does not mean nonsensical. It does not mean stupid. You're treating mental illness with little to no respect. 'Batshit insane' lumps together thousands of diagnoses, a plethora of behaviours, and millions of people into a level of random that ranks below Spongebob Squarepants.
This seems like a prime copout to actually giving him characterization. I think it's fairly obvious that you didn't research or spend a lot of time thinking about it, and I can name off-hand several people you've made uncomfortable and upset, all of whom are mentally ill.
There's a 99% chance I'm going to get jumped on for saying anything, but you're being really disrespectful and awful to people with mental illness. While some people may flock to your character, I can guarantee that you're going to make some people extremely uncomfortable and offended. If that's what you want, well, we have very different goals in RP.
tl;dr- Please don't.
Agreed with this. I'm not mentally ill, but "batshit insane" is one of those terms that is a huge red flag. It's usually used by people who don't research their characters, don't give the character a personality, insert way too much of themselves into the character, and use "he's CRAZY" as a copout when the character does something OOC or insulting. Nothing good comes from this.
In other words, it's a term used by people I'd MUCH rather avoid in IC and OOC circles.
I'm not trying to start an argument here, but why is having a character who suffers from a mental illness IC a copout? I would consider that to be a perfectly valid characterization, actually. I can possibly understand the terminology being offensive, but the act of playing a character who is "crazy" isn't something I myself would ever consider offensive, and FWIW, I, too, suffer from a mental illness. If I lived my life being offended by everyone who says something off color about people who are mentally ill, I'd probably never leave my room.
Oh, yes. I love the DK starting zone so much. So, so much. I second everything you said. EVERYTHING. I wish I never had to leave the DK starting zone or the Lich King's side. /sigh
Yes! Having the Lich King RIGHT THERE is just so... <3333333. When it was time to leave, I wanted to cling to his leg and never let go.
I mean, why can't you just say, "I choose to stay Scourge!" Over half of my DKs would choose that option.
One of my favorite memories of the DK starting zone was rolling a pair of blood elf DKs with my older sister (who was fairly new to WoW.) About 2/3 of the way through the zone, we had something like this exchange:
Her: "Why do we have to kill the dogs? That feels so mean."
Me: "Well, we are the bad guys, after all."
Her: "We're bad guys?"
Me: "The skull architecture, homicidal whispers, undead horses, and mass slaughter of defenseless innocents didn't clue you in?"
Somebody didn't read the quest text~
Hahaha. :D Killing random innocents? Okay! Killing someone who remembers the living you? Fine! But we all draw the line at killing dogs!
I recently did the starting zone again with a tiny redhaired gnome named Daisysmash. That makes two DKs for me. I almost want to start another one just for the starting zone. Probably a good thing I don't have any character slots left.
Same. I'm out of slots, or I'd have 9480124134312 DKs. :D
